Biography:
Dr. Ellen Shorter graduated cum laude from Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL, with a degree in biology. She earned her Doctor of Optometry from Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, graduating summa cum laude. While earning her doctorate, Dr. Shorter received many awards and honors, including the Exceptional Tutor Award; she served as the class salutatorian and was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa Optometric Honor Society and the Tomb and Key Honor Society.
Doctor Shorter completed her residency at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago, IL; and at the Blind Rehabilitation Center at Hines Veteran’s Hospital in Hines, IL. In 2010, she completed the BostonSight PROSE Clinical Fellowship at Boston Foundation for Sight. She has completed the Scholars for Teaching Excellence Faculty Fellowship at the University of Illinois and is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. Currently, Dr. Shorter is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at UIC. She specializes in medically necessary contact lenses, management of keratoprosthesis bandage lenses and PROSE (prosthetic replacement of the ocular surface ecosystem) for the management of severe dry eye.
